10 Things to do with Leftover Halloween Candy

When Halloween is over, what are we supposed to do with all of the sugary goodness that's leftover? Eat it all? Throw it away?

We’ve compiled a few different ideas of ways to re-use candy this year so you don’t find yourself feeling ill or wasting it all either!

1) Make an Art Project! Try searching “Edible Art for Kids on Google or Pinterest. You’ll find hundreds of different creative ways to get creative.

2) Give it to your local after-school program or to their teacher. School employees generally have very low budgets to spend on items for their classroom/students. Your teacher will be so thankful because they like to reward their students when they hard work and candy is expensive.

3) Calling all book worms! Fairview Clinics will swap your child’s candy for a new read. The candy will then be donated to military personnel serving overseas. Call your local clinic for more details.

4) Donate it to a local food bank or organization that helps families.

5) Give it to children who are hospitalized or sick and perhaps didn’t get the chance to trick-or-treat this year. For our Minnesotan readers, The Ronald McDonald Charity House accepts candy donations that will go to families with sick children. Visit the Twin Cities Ronald McDonald Charity House website to learn more.

6) Use it in the workplace! Who doesn’t like when a coworker comes in with bags of sweet treats to share? It can be so nice to grab a quick midday pick me up! 🙂

7) Exchange your candy for healthy items! Many dentist and orthodontics offices participate in something called the “Halloween Candy Buyback”. This system lets children exchange their candy for items to help keep their teeth and gums healthy. Call today to see if your dental office is participating!

8) Give it to the elderly. Have your child get dressed up again in their Halloween costume and head over to your local senior community center! You will make their day by paying them a visit and giving them candy. If this isn’t an option for you, check into Meals on Wheels about donating to their deliveries!

9) Use it to help educate kids. You can use candy to help teach colors, counting and adding/subtracting.

10) Save it for a Birthday party! Looking for something to stuff into your next piñata or goody bag?? Mixed candy is perfect for giving away at birthday celebrations! Save it now so you are covered! If you don’t have any specific upcoming events, freeze candy in gallon sized Ziploc baggies for the time being!
