How to Throw your Kid a Birthday Party on a Budget

I’ve always loved a good party, just ask my husband about our wedding! I also love DIY projects because the party is more personal then, and they can save you lots of money! I was so excited for McKenzie’s 1st Birthday Party and had a blast planning it. So much so, that we have hosted a fun themed party every year now. We also started adding an additional party two years ago for the twins! I think even one year the twins will want to have their celebrations so I will have the excuse to throw 3 parties!

I know all moms don’t enjoy throwing a party but it’s something I truly love! However, in order to pull these off, I need to save where I can! Kid birthday parties can really get out of hand and break the bank. If that was the case, my hubby wouldn’t agree to the madness! Here are my tips to save money while still throwing a super fun and themed kid birthday party!

Pick a Theme

What’s your kid’s favorite character? Or favorite color? Cartoon? If they are old enough, ask them! They take great pride in picking out their own theme! This will help you focus during the planning process.

Pinterest Ideas

You can literally search anything on Pinterest, and each search will bring up hundreds of ideas!!! Enter the theme and scroll through. Pin anything that sticks out to you! Even if it looks expensive or impossible. I’m telling you, you can create anything with a little bit of creativity!

Invitations

Printed invitations, plus postage can really add up! In this day and age, digital invitations are more than acceptable, and honestly probably preferred! If you insist on printed invitations, and I like to have one for scrapbooking, Walgreens Photo seems to be the most reasonable and usually has a good discount code!

The Cake

Again, you can spend a lot on a cake, but you don’t have to! I have ordered so many adorable and themed cakes from Sams Club and they are extremely affordable! You can also have fun and make your own. However, planning and hosting a party takes more effort than we ever expect, so if you’d like to take something off your plate or delegate, ordering a cake can be the perfect thing!

Decorations

This is my favorite part! And this is where Dollar Tree becomes my best friend! You can get almost ALL of your party supplies and decorations from the dollar store! I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true! All of your paper products, table cloths, utensils, party favors, and DIY material can be bought at this store. Even if you load up a cart, everything is only a $1! One of my best kept secrets is using table cloths for backdrops! Amazon, Walmart, and Oriental Trading are also affordable store options. If you are looking for particular product and have no luck at these stores, Party City is my last resort. Usually much more expensive, but one item here and there isn’t a big deal!

Below are some pictures of past parties and I promise, almost everything is from Dollar Tree!

If throwing a party at your house doesn’t interest you, Twin Cities Mom Collective put a great Birth Party Guide together.

I hope these tips were helpful. If you want to be able to throw your kid a fun and themed birthday party, it IS possible! I am a fun mom, but I also don’t have a large party budget! lol

Have fun, mama!!!
