Do you love the Holidays as much as we do?!!
Of all the times to celebrate throughout the year, Halloween is one of our top favorites. I know this year may look a little different for your family because of COVID (Deja Vu 2020), but that doesn’t have to eliminate having fun with the kids! We start this blog by suggesting some fun, but safe ideas for Halloween 2021.

- Bake Halloween Cookies
- Create Halloween Crafts
- Visit a Pumpkin Patch & Carve Pumpkins
- Enjoy a Spooky Movie Night
- Indulge in a Jack-O-Lantern Pizza Night
- Attend Safe Outdoor Events
- Decorate Your House
Here are some ideas on how to save in different ways this spooky season!
All about Decor!
Do your kiddos love to decorate? At How 2 Mom, the consensus is that all of our kiddos are heavy into helping out! They have such a great time setting up for each special season throughout the year. But how do you keep the house looking “Pinterest ready” without spending tons of cash??
1) Check out Dollar Stores/Dollar Sections! You can find super cute items for cheap cheap cheap. There are gem’s for just a few dollars at your local Target each season. Go ahead and buy yourself something cute 🙂
2) WAIT to buy! After said Holiday is over, go on a shopping spree! All of the decorations for that event will be on clearance so you’ll get them for a fraction of the original price. How great is that?
Bring them home, pack them up, and next year you’ll get to unpack a fresh batch of new decorations with your family and have a blast! As mothers, we at How 2 Mom love to find ways to save like this because let’s face it, the adorable mini humans we’re raising…they’re expensive!
Yummy time!
When Halloween is over, what are we supposed to do with all of the sugary goodness that’s leftover?? Eat it all??? Throw it away???
We’ve compiled a few different ideas of ways to re-use candy this year so you don’t find yourself feeling ill or wasting it all either!
1) Make an Art Project! Try searching “Edible Art for Kids on Google or Pinterest. You’ll find hundreds of different creative ways to get creative.
2) Give it to your local after-school program or to their teacher. School employees generally have very low budgets to spend on items for their classroom/students. Your teacher will be so thankful because they like to reward their students when they hard work and candy is expensive.
3) Calling all book worms! Fairview Clinics will swap your child’s candy for a new read. The candy will then be donated to military personnel serving overseas. Call your local clinic for more details.
4) Donate it to a local food bank or organization that helps families.
5) Give it to children who are hospitalized or sick and perhaps didn’t get the chance to trick-or-treat this year. For our Minnesotan readers, The Ronald McDonald Charity House accepts candy donations that will go to families with sick children. Visit the Twin Cities Ronald McDonald Charity House website to learn more.
6) Use it in the workplace! Who doesn’t like when a coworker comes in with bags of sweet treats to share? It can be so nice to grab a quick midday pick me up! 🙂
7) Exchange your candy for healthy items! Many dentist and orthodontics offices participate in something called the “Halloween Candy Buyback”. This system lets children exchange their candy for items to help keep their teeth and gums healthy. Call today to see if your dental office is participating!
8) Give it to the elderly. Have your child get dressed up again in their Halloween costume and head over to your local senior community center! You will make their day by paying them a visit and giving them candy. If this isn’t an option for you, check into Meals on Wheels about donating to their deliveries!
9) Use it to help educate kids. You can use candy to help teach colors, counting and adding/subtracting.
10) Save it for a Birthday party! Looking for something to stuff into your next piñata or goody bag?? Mixed candy is perfect for giving away at birthday celebrations! Save it now so you are covered! If you don’t have any specific upcoming events, freeze candy in gallon sized Ziploc baggies for the time being!
1. DIY Sweet Treats
Cut up the left over candy and use it as a topping for yogurt, trail mix, or energy bites.
2. Give it to the Candy Fairy
Similar to the Tooth Fairy, leave the candy out at night and swap it with a small gift.
3. Donate It (great minds thing alike)
Donate your leftover candy to the homeless shelter, operation shoe box, or to the troops over seas.
4. Pick your Favorite
Have your kids divide the candy up into a pile that they like and one that they don’t, which will teach them the importance of only indulging on the things that are worth it.
5. Eat It
Remember, moderation is key. Halloween is one day. Remember most importantly, have fun with your kids, because you won’t get this day back. Try not to stress too much and have some grace with yourself.
We hope these tips help and we hope you have a spooky fun Halloween this year!
