What “They” Don’t Tell You: Pregnancy Series

So you've got hopes for a bun in the oven....

Yay! When you start trying to conceive (TTC) everyone and anyone will feel that they have earned the right to give you all unsolicited advice they would like to 🙂 We’re obviously kidding…..but yeah….it’ll happen!

Today we’re here to talk about a few things people DON’T tell you about Pregnancy! Some things mamas may or may not expect, depending on the experiences of people they know who have already had babies. Our hope is that this will give you a heads up about some different things to watch for!

Pregnancy doesn't always happen that simply...

It is very common for getting pregnant to take time; even for those who are “Fertile Myrtle”. However, Infertility of many sorts is much more common than many couples know about. 1 in 8 couples in the US struggles with becoming pregnant. We have discussed this in several previous blogs as members of our How 2 Mom team have experience Infertility first hand. Click the image to read on.

Your ladies may leak...

Um….say what??? Yes, it’s true. Many women experience some leakage of colostrum prior to the birth of their child. This can start as early as the second trimester! But don’t fret if you don’t experience any leaking. This is just a potential symptom, but it is not at all an indicator of if you will or will not have an adequate milk supply for your baby. It all just depends on how YOUR body is responding to the hormonal changes happening within.

Nausea can come in MANY forms!

There are many old wives tails about pregnancy involving nausea and truth be told, it’s really a toss up! A women may experience mild and rare nausea in one pregnancy, and have what is known as hyperemesis gravidarum in the next. Bottom line is, whether you’r e feeling no nausea at all, or the mere sight of a certain food sends you running for the restroom, it could very well be your version of “normal” for your pregnancy!

Vericose Veins can happen in unexpected regions...

Vulvar Varicosities, Hemorrhoids, you name it…it can happen in pregnancy. Though these are unsightly and can be uncomfortable…or even downright painful…there isn’t much that can be done for them until baby is born and your body is healing. In fact, some women experience hemorrhoids only in their postpartum period and not in pregnancy. If you are having uncomfortable symptoms, talk to your provider and consider one of the helpful supportive devices we have linked below to decrease your discomfort. Though they’re not exactly fashionable, they have been shown to help in some cases and hey, it’s worth a shot!

Your placenta can form in many different positions...

Like nausea, placenta placement comes in many variable forms. Some women experience anterior placentas which cover the front of their belly, thus making it more difficult to ascertain baby’s movements. Other women have what is know as a placental previa. This complication comes in different “stages”. Sometimes if found at the 20 week ultrasound, it can resolve itself by a later stage in pregnancy; other times it is an indication for a cesarean as the safest method of delivery. If you are diagnosed with a previa, be sure to discuss the “grade” and your options with your care provider.

Your initial ultrasound MAY be internal...

Meet what us infertility vets refer to as “Wanda”, the internal ultrasound probe. Though the idea of this may sound daunting at first, it isn’t that bad…truly! Sometimes when a pregnancy is very early and a provider is looking to confirm a heartbeat and gestational age, they may be unable to do so externally if things are TOO early on. This method of ultrasound is very accurate at finding the smallest details, such as your little one’s heartbeat SOMETIMES as early as 6 weeks!!

They're likely gonna swab test near your bum...

A very common test performed late in the third trimester is known as the Group B Strep test. Many women have heard of this, but aren’t entirely aware of what this entails. Your provider will need to take a sample with a swab from the perineal area (between your vagina and anus). Though women are used to the idea of checks/tests involving their vagina through pregnancy, this one can come as a slight shocker for unprepared mamas! Don’t worry though, it is NOT painful and over in a flash! We just wanted to give you a heads up 🙂

And these are just a handful...

Of the less commonly talked about potentials. We hope that you found this blog informative and wish you all the best on your TTC and prenatal journey!
